As Coronavirus continues to impact economies, families and communities around the globe, people all over our little planet are practising Social Distancing. This is a daunting task for many – limiting social interactions with family and friends can make some people feel really isolated.
As we all get used to this temporary new normal, it’s important to focus on the things we can do to stay connected to ourselves and each other.
Put pen to paper
Write down your thoughts and feelings or create a gratitude journal - doing this will help you stay grounded. It will also encourage you to focus on the good things in life and retain that positive mental attitude which is invaluable in times like these.
Join an online community
Become an active participant in an online community such as Reddit - it’s a great way to get involved in topics you’re interested in and enjoy a daily dose of virtual socialisation.
Host a virtual watch party
If you’re a movie fan and miss binge watching box sets with your friends, you can set up a virtual watch party on Netflix. You’ll be able to watch your favourite shows with your friends from the comfort of your own sofas. If you’re already fed up of watching TV, you can host a virtual book club instead – just get everyone on a weekly video call.
Learn something new
Keep your brain stimulated by learning something new - now’s a good a time as any. Try a new language, sign up to an educational online stream or keep it simply by learning a new recipe.
Put down your phone
Staying connected through technology is hugely beneficial - but sometimes you need to take a break. Just putting down your phone for a few hours a day will give you some much needed distance from negative media. Turn off unnecessary news notifications and alerts too – these can adversely impact your mental health.
Get outdoors safely
If you’re able to get out of the house safely then do. Take a walk around a park, or your neighbourhood – the air and the outdoors will keep you connected to nature and help quieten even the most anxious of minds. Please remember to keep the recommended distance from people not living in your household.
Open the windows
If you can’t leave your house, open the windows. Let the air flow through the house – it will keep things fresh indoors and help you stay in touch with the elements.
We know this is a tremendously difficult time for our planet and our people, but we’re all in this together and remember, this too shall pass.
